Cash available for green schemes
Grants announced by provincial government
A TOTAL of €8 million is being stumped up by Alicante provincial government this year to ‘protect and conserve’ the environment.
Deputy for the environment Miguel Ángel Sánchez explained that various grants will be available for town halls around the province.
A total of €500,000 has been set aside to help local authorities maintain municipal parks and green areas.
A further €300,000 will be available for councils to ‘improve’ natural spaces in their municipalities.
Sr Sánchez noted that €250,000 will help town halls to draw up plans to prevent forest fires and €200,000 is available for husbandry in forested areas.
Fly-tipping is also in their sights, with €300,000 to ‘restore, clean and recover’ areas which have been blighted by uncontrolled dumping of rubbish.
Composting schemes such as the one set up at the end of 2019 by residents in San Miguel de Salinas can be started with aid from a communal pot of €120,000. At the same time the provincial government will also help councils to ‘treat urban rubbish’.
Sr Sánchez added that there will be €255,000 to manage stray cat colonies.
The provincial deputy assured that commitment to the environment was one of the principal concerns of the Alicante government which is run by the Partido Popular (PP).
He also outlined a number of other areas in which councils will be able to bid for environmental subsidies including the care of ‘monumental trees’; drawing up energy efficiency schemes; purchasing bins and furniture for parks; environmental training; and environment awareness days, amongst others.
