Want to stop drinking?

On December 23, 50 members of the Vall del Pop U3A left Jalón to spend Christmas in Peñiscola. The weather was gorgeous with a good forecast ahead, so nothing would stop Santa finding them!

Their first stop was the Nueva Centro Shopping Mall in Valencia, fabulous. Following lunch there they continued to Benicarlo, and the beachfront 4-star hotel La Plaza. Time to relax and unpack before dinner.

On Christmas Eve they spent the day in Tarragona, a partly walled city with many historical buildings, interesting shops and along the Rambla, the iconic statue of the “human tower” which Tarragona is famous for (see photo). We took the land train tour and in the old part of the city the ride became “a bit hairy” with the driver taking the narrow streets and bends at speed.

They had an extremely good Gala meal that evening followed by live music and dancing until late.

On Christmas morning many strolled along the VERY long and beautifully kept beach, the weather, was perfect and 3 degrees warmer than Jalon!! Before their Gala Christmas lunch, they met near the pool area for carol singing and Secret Santa presents. For the singing they acquired another 30 welcomed guests who joined in, including Pepe our driver and his colleagues, who sang with gusto when it came to Feliz Navidad. Secret Santa was a huge success, with a great range of presents, selected after endless shopping trips, both here in Spain and England. After the superb Gala lunch all they wanted was a siesta, and not surprising not many made it into dinner that night.

Boxing Day saw them heading for Morella, where the highlights are the castle and medieval walls erected in the 14th century. They had been warned to wrap up warmly as Morella sits almost 1,000 meters above sea level. It was

very cold and windy, but again the sun shone as they explored this quaint and historical town with its narrow streets, tall houses and a lot of museums, and some of the group visited the beautiful church. Later in the afternoon, after returning to the hotel, they joined Laura and Trevor in their “Family Fortune” game, which at times became a rather riotous affair but good fun.

On their last morning they went to Peñiscola town with its majestic castle (which featured in the film El Cid) and long sweeping beaches. It really deserved a longer visit, but lunch called before they headed home.

A short quiz on the way back was enjoyed by those members still awake, with 3 happy winners. They all agreed they’d had a great time and extended their thanks to Sandra Welham and Laura Terry, and of course Pepe and Gandía Tours, who had helped to make this U3A trip successful.
