Olga Diego's inflatable electronic sculptures

FOLLOWING a journey from Valencia to the Treasure Hill Light Festival in Taipei and then on to the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the exhibition Jardín Automáta, by artist Olga Diego is finally on display in her home city of Alicante.

The exhibition is a gigantic installation of almost 100 inflatable-electronic sculptures inspired by the beautiful, extravagant and suggestive characters that populate the Garden of Earthly Delights triptych by Hieronymus Bosch.

In it, naked humans and animals of all species enjoy a world of limitless pleasure, which also hosts beautiful birds, fish and exotic fruits.

These are the elements that appear in Jardín Automáta – a maze of large translucent bodies that suggest a magical existence.

The exhibition, which is taking place at La Lonja del Pescado exhibition space in Alicante city until February 23, is one of Olga Diego’s largest projects.

It contains different humanoids, quadrupeds and hybrid characters which are suspended in the exhibition space and in continuous motion, while other inflatables are perched on the ground recreating more earthly and libidinous scenes.

Within these translucent bodies, their motors, like electric hearts, fill them with air, marking with their rhythms an ‘indecipherable electric symphony’.

Alicante councillor for culture Antonio Manresa said: “Through these particular characters, Olga invites us to take an important and necessary reflection, at a particularly critical moment, on the environment and the excessive use of plastic – a clear example of what we must eradicate.”

To this end, when the Alicante exhibition closes, the artist will transform the pieces in Jardín Autómata into a new project, which will be premiered in a display in New York.

“There is an ‘after’ for Jardín Autómata,” said Sra Diego.

“This is an experiment with plastic mutation. My goal is to give it a new life. Plastic is perishable, and far from generating waste, the intention is to transform it into a rigid and permanent work.”
