“Never memorise something that you can look up”

-

That piece of advice came from none other than Albert Einstein and maybe teachers should heed his observation that “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough”. One of his teachers said he would never amount to anything, little knowing that E = mc2 would become a universally known equation, even if most of us still don’t understand it!

Jávea Players are offering a choice of two monologues on different nights, when Pip Utton, a legend from the Edinburgh Fringe, transforms himself into Einstein or Churchill.

With minimal props, an excellent German accent and even the slight twitch of a neurotic scientist, Einstein comes to life under Utton’s careful guidance. Albert wasn’t mad, although he described insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”, which he must have done umpteen times.

In a 2002 BBC poll, Churchill was voted the Greatest Briton in History. Utton’s portrayal makes for a compelling, amusing and warm-hearted play, foibles and all. Ultimately, Churchill was not just in the right place at the right time, but earned his place in history. That said, whilst he loved his wife dearly, he actually had a love/hate relationship with the military, regretting some of the harsh wartime decisions he had to make.

The shows will be performed at the Jávea Players’ Studio Theatre in Jávea. Churchill on January 27, 28 and 29 and Einstein on January 30 and 31, February 1.

Tickets at €13 are selling fast, check the website: www.javeaplayers.com.
