A chess tournament held in Alfaz del Pi attracted over 120 players last weekend. It was the tenth edition of the Children and Youth Blitz 'Ciudad de Alicante', held at the Pavilion Pau Gasol in Alfaz. The tournament was backed by the Spanish Chess Federation, whose goal is to discover young talents.

The tournament was divided into different categories Under-8, Under-10, Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16. Not only did it aim to discover and promote new talent, but also to promote the sport, mainly of the younger generation. Without

losing sight of adults, a parallel tournament called ‘Papás y Mamás juegan' was also held, so that the companions of the participants had the opportunity to participate.

In the Under-8 category, the young Héctor Barrot of the Santa Coloma chess club was crowned. In the Under-10 category, Elche player Pablo Basaunana achieved the first position, and team mate Mykhailo Lagutin gained a very important third position.

In the Under-12’s, little known player Volodomyr won the title, followed by Marcos Muñoz Osete of the Chess Club

Alfaz. In the Under-16’s, Nieves Sanleón achieved the first place by displaying a great level of play.

In the adults competition, local teacher, Vicente Cano, achieved second place.

Councillor for sports, Oscar Pérez, presented the trophies and wanted to thank the organizers of the tournament who opted for the facilities of Alfàs. He congratulated the participants, especially the winners.

It is hoped the doors of the Pau Gasol Pavilion will now be open for future competitions.
