Calpe to host music band competitio­n

CALPE is to host the ‘Provincial bands competitio­n, second section’, to be held on March 22. The contest has been organised by Alicante provincial government in collaborat­ion with Calpe council and the Unión Musical Calp-Ifach musical assocation. It is a contest for orchestras who have between 51 and 70 members.

A draw was held last week at the provincial palace, and the following orchestras were chosen: Societat Musical L'Alianza de Mutxamel, L'Harmonía Societat Musical d'Alacant and Unión Musical de Asís. The event was attended by the provincial vicepresid­ent and head of the culture department, Julia Parra; Calpe's culture councillor, Pilar Cabrera, and the president of the Unión Musical Calp-Ifach, Miguel Pastor.

An obligatory piece to be played by all ensembles will be 'The ritual of fire' by the composer and director of Canals, David Penadés Fasanar.

In addition, as works of free choice, the Societat Musical L'Alianza de Mutxamel, directed by Mario Roig Vila, will perform 'Art' by Juan B. Francés Parra and 'Cantus Laetus' by David R. Gilligham. While L'Harmonía Societat Musical d'Alacant, directed by José Tomas Moñinos Baeza, will perform 'Musical Apollo' by Amando Blanquer and 'Valhalla' by Francisco Zacares Fort.

The Unión Musical de Assisi, directed by Francisco Antonio Soler Compañ, will perform the paso doble 'Unión Musical de Asís" by Valdés and "Gloriosa" by Yasuhide Ito.

The Union Musical CalpIfach will close the competitio­n with their own performanc­e.

The prizes consist of €4,200 for each of the participat­ing orchestras and €2,500 more for the one who obtains an honourable mention.
