Women offered protection from abuse

- By Jack Troughton jtroughton@cbnews.es

POLICE are protecting 64 women across Jávea who are seen as vulnerable to the 'scourge' of domestic violence - one designated a 'high risk' of aggression from a partner.

The figures were revealed by the town’s mayor José Chulvi during a meeting of Jávea’s Citizen Security Board during a view of the ‘VioGen’ system.

The meeting, chaired by central government representative for Alicante Araceli Poblador, saw the town again commit to a system that is designed to help allow women to escape the threat of violence from partners or former partners.

The VioGen system is run by local police and offers help to women who have made complaints of abuse in a bid to keep them safe - offering support and analysing the risk of violence against them.

Jávea was the first town in Alicante to offer such a level of assistance to potential victims when it introduced the scheme on 2013 in a bid to save lives - 55 women lost their lives across Spain last year after falling victim to ‘gender violence’.

Ms Poblador congratulated the tow hall and its policy as it reviewed and upgraded its system.

“It is an example of a policy to fight this problem and is designed to educate in equality, to take preventative measures and to cooperate with police for the care and protection of possible victims,” she said.

Jávea has two specially trained police officers who work 'exclusively' on the VioGen scheme and coordinate with other bodies to offer assistance.

Analysing crime and criminality at the group meeting, Ms Poblador said figures showed that Jávea was below the average for Alicante.

She also recommended residents download the app ‘AlertCops’ to their mobile phones which gave free access to alert police to any problem and receive safety messages from security forces.
