Eddie's Final Whistle

- By Eddie Cagigao

2nd B Division, Group 3 Match day 23 - February 2

Villarreal CF “B” 4 – 1 UE Llagostera

A very comfortable victory for the home side who controlled the game from start to finish and in the end, ran out very comfortable winners. Two goals from Villarreal's Edu Espiau (17 and 28 min), Mujica (58 min) and Collado on 73 min were the scorers for Villarreal “B” and although Magallan did pull one back for the visitors, on 58 min) was nowhere near enough to trouble the Villarreal reserves.

This win moves Villarreal up into fifth position with 39 points – just one point outside the Play Off places and five points behind the league leaders. Llagostera arrived at Villarreal looking to close the gap on their opponents but ended the game in 10th position with 30 points.

Atletico Levante UD 1 – 1 Orihuela CF

Mid-table Atletico Levante, fresh from last week's stunning win in Alicante against Hercules, took on another of the struggling sides as Orihuela CF visited their Buñol sports ground.

Orihuela, who have made a number of changes of late, look a far better side than the one who have had a terrible first half of the season, however, after just 3 minutes the home side had already taken the lead as the Levante player Giorgi, fired home to give his side the lead. Despite the setback, Orihuela pushed forward and after a few missed chances, before Pito (who is on loan from Levante to Orihuela) equalised after 35 minutes with a fine individual effort.

As far as goals went, that was it for this game although both sides had lots of chances to score again without too much luck in what turned out to be a fair result and a share of the points which probably left Levante happier than Orihuela who need the points to climb out of the relegation positions.

Levante are in 11th position with 29 points. They are seven points above the relegation zone and 11 points below the Play Off places. Orihuela are still in trouble. They are in 19th position, one place off the bottom of the table and have 18 points – one more point than bottom side AE Prat. However, they are now five points below the first automatic safety places although they do look as if they could climb out of the danger zone if they keep playing as well as they are.

UE Olot 1 – 0 CD Castellon

CD Castellon travelled north to Cataluña confident that they could add to their two wins of the spin before this game. However, in what turned out to be one of their worst performances of the season, they returned to Castellon empty handed after going down 1-0 to an UE Olot side who are demonstrating that slowly and quietly, they are climbing the table.

The only goal of the game arrived in the 53 minute of second half and despite going behind, Castellon were not able to up the game and ended up getting beaten for the fifth time this season. This defeat leaves CD Castellon in 3rd position. They have 40 points and are four points behind the league leaders, CE Sabadell and one points behind second placed FC Barcelona “B”.

The home side, after this latest win – their 8th win of the season – leaves them in 9th position with 33 points and looking good to finish in a comfortable mid Table position, which was always their pre-Season objective.

CE Sabadell FC 1 – 2 Hercules CF

Having had a disastrous first half of the season and amid turmoil, fan protests etc. Hercules finally took some action. A new President has brought in his own men, the technical director has left and the club has brought in some new players. Whatever and whoever is responsible for the drastic changes, they have obviously worked as Hercules went to the league leaders and returned with all three well deserved points, inflicting the fifth defeat of the season on the leaders and, at the same time, giving themselves a much needed boost.

However, the game did not start the way the visitors expected as after 30 minutes, the home side had already taken the lead and missed a number of chances. But the changes at Hercules shone through and after equalising on 36 minutes through Nikos Vergos, they took the lead early in the second half as Pedro Torres scored from a corner to put the visitors 1-2 ahead in the game, a result that they were able to hold to the final whistle.

The win, apart from the massive lift it will give the club, also helps their league table. Although still in the relegation zone – Hercules are in 17th place, the final automatic relegation place – they have 21 points and only two points outside the first of the safety places.

Despite the defeat, CE Sabadell stay at the top of the group with 44 points – three points ahead of second place FC Barcelona “B”.

CF La Nucia 0 – 0 Valencia CF Mestalla

Very little to say about this game other than the score draw was everything both sides deserved in a match with little football, no drama, few chances and no goals. To say that probably the highlight of the game was the two yellow cards (one for each side) and when the match referee sent off the home manager!

The draw helps neither side although I suppose La Nucia will be the happier of the two even though they have dropped two home points. Valencia Mestalla stay in fifth bottom place with 22 points and one point above the automatic relegation positions.

La Nucia, after an excellent start to the season, have not been good in the last two months. They have dropped from the very top of the table down to 13th place with 26 points and five points above the relegation positions.
