ALICANTE ALICANTE HAS FALLEN

The exhibition ‘Alicante has fallen, the war finishes here’ commemorat­ing the 80th anniversar­y of the end of the Spanish Civil War is taking place at the Casa de las Máquinas in Alicante city. The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 09.3013.30. It is closed on Mondays. Admission is free. A visit can also be tied in with a guided tour of the Séneca and Balmis air raid shelters, which take place every Wednesday at 18.00, Fridays and Saturdays at 12.00 and 18.00 and Sundays at 12.00. General admission to the guided tour is €5 and must be booked in advance by email at cmemoriahd­alicante@gmail.com or by telephone on 690 004 431.

The telephone booking service is available from Monday to Friday from 10.00-13.30 and 17.00-20.00. The tours are in Spanish but can be arranged in other languages for groups of 10 people or more. Prior notice is required. Casa de las Máqiunas is situated at the junction of Calle Portugal and Calles Italia.

OCEAN RACE EXHIBITION

Exhibition looking at Spain’s involvemen­t in the Volvo Ocean Race at the Volvo Ocean Race museum in Alicante port. The display contains more than four decades worth of exhibits showing the country’s role in what is one of the toughest sailing races in the world.

Open Tuesday to Thursday and Sundays from 10.00-14.00 and Friday and Saturday from 10.0018.00. Admission is free

GANDIA

THE OTHER VOICE EXHIBITION

Until Mar 20: US-born author and sculptor Kathryn Hart seeks to revive those 'Other Voices', those of strong women in history – Lucrecia Borgia and Venetian feminist writers, and women in Ancient Greece, like Aracne from the famous Velázquez painting.

And her exhibition in Gandia's Coll Alas hall, straight from the Biennale in Venice, shows her interpreta­tion of history from 500 years of women's viewpoints – in black-and-white photos, paintings, statuettes and abstract structures.

One of her sculptures was actually created on site days ahead of the exhibition, and Kathryn (Texas, 1961) was there to cut the red tape.

The Other Voice is open until Friday, March 20 inclusive (entrance is free).

Every Sunday through out the summer a variety of market stalls are on the promenade in Javea Port, where all products on offer are handmade by the stallholde­rs.

'SHE IN THE SUN' ART EXIBITION

Jon Barreno will exhibit his paintings at IB Isabel Bilbao Art Gallery.

For some time now Jon Barredo (Bilbao 1950) has stablished a unique relationsh­ip with the sea. He now intends to carry out an exercise of plastic integratio­n in which the shadows of the objects found and placed in the painting continue to have importance in the process and the colour, as a unifying element, acquires a greater prominence.

In this exhibition he shows that route, a before and a now in his work, in transit.

His paintings will be exhibited at IB Isabel Bilbao Art Gallery in Jávea at IB Isabel Bilbao Art Gallery, Avda Ausias March 11.

HEAD FOR THE HEARTLANDS

Until Feb 16: Artist Nicoletta Tomas Caravia opens her latest exhibition tonight at the Casa del Cable on the seafront in Javea port where the show ‘A Path with a Heart’ with its colourful canvasses can be viewed.. Nicolette, who enjoys an internatio­nal reputation for her work, bares her soul with a dreamlike imagery view of the world.

LA NUCIA

SPANISH LESSONS FOR RESIDENTS

This year, the School for Adults in La Nucía will offer again ‘Spanish Courses for Foreign Residents’.

The lessons will start in October and end in June, next year. The courses will be taught by qualified teachers, in small groups and in a friendly environmen­t.

The School offers the following free courses (30€ annual subscripti­on only):

Monday: Basic Level (4pm – 6pm) Tuesday: Intermedia­te (4pm – 6pm),

LLIBER NEW MARKET IN TOWN

Every Thursday: The small village located in the Jalón Valley has begun a new weekly flea market (rastro).

The market is open every Thursday between 09.00 and 14.00 in the medical centre car park (Calle Colón). There will be a wide range of items available for sale including antiques and secondhand clothing.

LLIBER BARBECUE DAY

Feb 9: Everyone is welcome to spend a day in this quaint and pretty village and to enjoy a freshly cook barbecue.

The event takes place this Sunday and will be at the sports centre.

At a cost of €25 per person, a barbecue will be running from 10.00 to 19.00, and rice with beans and turnips will be served at 14.30. Drinks including beer, sangria and soft drinks are included, as is dessert.

Music will be played throughout what should be a very enjoyable day.

The first 100 people to reserve a space will receive a commemorat­ive apron.

The cost for children aged 4 to 11 years is €10, and for 12 to 16 years, the price is €18.

TITANIC EXHIBITION

Until Feb 23: Titanic: The Exhibition is an internatio­nal exhibition that has broken attendance records in several countries already, and is now located at the city’s Kinépolis shopping centre for our viewing pleasure.

It tells the true story of the infamous vessel and includes not only recreation­s of how the interior of the ship was, but close to 200 original items that were on board on that fateful April 10, 1912. These include jewellery, letters written by Chief Officer William Murdoch or personal items carried by the passengers. Kinépolis is located at Avenida de Francisco Tomás y Valiente. The exhibition is open from 17.00 to 21.30 on weekdays, and 11.00 to 21.30 on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.

Tickets cost between €7 and €12.5 depending on whether attendees qualify for discounts.

VILLAJOYOS­A

THEATRE AT VILAMUSEU

Villajoyos­a are giving a guided theatrical tour of their latest exhibition ‘Escalvas de la Belleza’ (Slaves to beauty), this is a novel and fun way of viewing and learning about the different pieces on show.

Of the 150 pieces on show, 115 are being seen for the first time, and there are some that have great archaeolog­ical value.

The theatrical visits are every Thursday at 19.30 and Saturdays at 11.30 and cost an extra €2.

The museum is open daily from 10.00 to 14.00 and 18.00 to 21.30 Tuesday to Saturday, Sundays and holidays: 10.00 to 14.00. Normal entry costs €3.
