Top female cyclists compete in Volta

- By Jo Pugh

THE BEST female cyclists in the world will meet today (Friday) in Finestrat on the occasion of the ‘IV Setmana Ciclista Valenciana’ (the women’s cycling race of the Valencian region).

The town will be the finish of the main stage – a tough 126-kilometre ride to include five mountain climbs from Agost, such as the Maigmó, the Carrasqueta, the Alto de Benifallim, the Alto de Tudons and Finestrat. Twenty-five teams from five countries are taking part in the event. Among the competitors are top ten world champions such as Anna van der Breggen and Chantal Blaack.

A giant TV screen will be erected at the finish line for supporters to follow the race.

Because of the race, traffic restrictions will be in force between 16.00 and 19.00 around the area of the sports centre and Avenida Benidorm to its junction with Carrer Fonteta. Road closures will also be in force in the old town.

Towards Villajoyosa, the traffic will be halted for a short while because the Volta will be arriving on that road (CV-759). Towards Sella, Orxeta and Relleu the traffic will be stopped (CV-758) and traffic will be diverted towards Villajoyosa.

“Sporting tourism is back with power to publicise the town internationally and, on this occasion, gives visibility to the female sport.

Therefore, I think that is an ideal opportunity to express our full support and also to show, once again, the hospitality of people from Finestrat”, said David Alarcon, the councillor for sports.
