Coronavirus and social isolation

-

The Spanish government's measures to restrict the spread of coronavirus has many consequences for citizens of all nationalities living in Spain. Perhaps one less obvious outcome of the current requirement for everyone to stay in their home, other than to undertake essential journeys, can be the increased impact of social isolation and feelings of loneliness.

The exceptional methods of containment recently put in place highlight just how important social connections are between friends and family. In addition, many of us rely on hobbies, interests and activities to get us out and about, and to connect with others in our community. It's also a sharp reminder that for many people life is a constant struggle coping with loneliness and social isolation, with or without the methods currently employed to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Staying in touch with friends, family and neighbours can help to ease the feeling of isolation. The telephone and laptop can be a major help in maintaining contacts by sharing the ways you are (or are not) coping and by asking those you know how they are getting on.

Isolation measures are there to protect as many people as possible from coronavirus. It will be a temporary measure but if each of us make an effort to stay connected, it may make a difference to those who may be feeling alone, especially at this time.

If you are feeling anxious or are suffering the effects of loneliness, Samaritans in Spain's teams of volunteers are here to listen to you, providing emotional support to all English speakers.
