Calpe trawlers maintain fish supplies

The pandemic is not stopping the arrival of fresh fish in Calpe. Being an essential food item, the fishing boats continue to leave Calpe port in the early hours in order to continue the supply for fishmongers in the area. “This is essential and so critical for society, and we have the obligation to supply the fishmongers of our province”, said Calpe Fisherman’s Association. On Wednesday, the traditional fish auction was held in Calpe fish market, applying 'Strictly and thoroughly, the health and prevention standards that are dictated and recommended by both the WHO and the Ministry of Health.' There, the traditional species were auctioned included whiting, red mullet, crabs, white prawn, octopus, monkfish and other species that are often caught by trawlers off the coastline. In the early hours of Thursday, the trawlers set out to sea once more in order to supply the fishmongers in the Marina Alta and Baixa and even Valencia and Alicante with their precious daily catches. “We understand that in this critical pandemic situation such as the one we are experiencing with COVID-19, we must keep our boats in production so that the fresh food supply chain remains active. We are assuming the same risks and strictly adopting all preventive measures as are other professionals who belong to other vital sectors”, stated the Fisherman’s Association.

The auction is only open to fishmongers for the time being.
