TWO REVELLERS have died after consuming drinks which contained 96% alcohol.

National Police reported that they are investigating the deaths which occurred following at get-together at an apartment in Los Ángeles neighbourhood of Alicante city.

The victims are a 44-yearold Ecuadorian woman and a 40-year-old Bolivian man.

According to state news agency EFE, they were drinking in the flat with four other people late on Saturday night when they ran out of beer.

They decided to burn 96% alcohol and mix the concoction with soft drinks, according to the EFE report.

The victims did not start to feel ill until Monday.

A man called the emergency services at around 18.00 that day to report that his partner was ‘having convulsions’.

When a paramedic arrived at their home the woman was already dead.

National Police officers opened an investigation into the incident ‘to clarify the circumstances of the death’.

“At that moment there was a second call to the emergency services stating that a man had the same symptoms in another home in the city,” explained a police source.

“This person died as they were being taken by ambulance to hospital.”

The EFE report notes that police discovered that the two victims had been at the same party.

After speaking to the other people who attended the officers were able to establish that they had consumed the 96% proof drink.

They noted that a third person – a 28-year-old Ecuadorian man – was being treated in Alicante general hospital and was still under observation.

EFE noted that two more people at the party had not touched the drink – a third person had only drunk a small amount and had ‘gone to hospital without assistance from others’ for a check-up and then been released.
