Easy Horse Care weathering the storm

- By Alex Watkins

DESPITE confinement and very soggy weather, spirits remained high at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales on Tuesday morning.

Co-founders Rod and Sue Weeding were hard at work keeping the foundation’s 120 rescued horses, ponies and donkeys fed and as dry as possible.

Sue told Costa Blanca News that fortunately the three pumps they were able to buy from donations had kept the water levels down, although this required Rod to lug them around night and day through the mud from place to place as they were needed.

"Many of the equines have to be kept in the stables, which they are not best pleased about but at least they are not flooded," she explained.

Despite not being spring chickens, Rod and Sue are trying to manage as well as they can on their own, isolating themselves as much as possible to minimise any risk of them catching the coronavirus, which would endanger the whole project.

Although they have received many offers from people willing to help, she said they think it is best not to bring anyone else in at this time.

Sue said they have a couple of volunteers coming to help in the fields five days a week but keeping their distance, and Dorothea the vet is still coming twice a day but has to be careful because her own mother’s health is fragile.

Supporters can still help by making donations, which Sue said are more important than ever since they had to close all their charity shops and let their staff go, and all fundraisers have been cancelled.

After previous bouts of flooding destroyed all local stocks of forage, donations enabled them to stock up with three weeks worth of feed.

But they will soon need more and Sue was concerned that this latest bout of heavy rain may have destroyed what little forage has been grown and harvested this year.
