Montgo Golf Society

- Golf suspended by Geoff Willcock Captain Montgo GS

Montgo Golf Society along with all other golfers in Spain are unable to play due to the coronavirus.

What do we as golfers do in this exceptionally difficult time?

It was Mark Twain who said, “Golf is a good walk spoiled”. The golf course I play measures just over 6000 metres, this is of course correct if you manage to keep the ball in the fairway all the way to the green. We as amateur golfers and some professionals do not always manage this.

As I play three times a week this means that I walk a minimum of 18 kilometres (over 11 miles) however as mentioned above the ball does not always go straight. It goes into the tress on the left then the trees on the right and occasionally on to the adjacent fairway. Sometimes it does stay on the correct fairway. I would guess that this would add at least 10% to the distance walked. Of course, golfers are stopping frequently to play their next shot, this makes the walk less strenuous than a full power walk, however it is still a lot of walking.

Now I am not a personal trainer, but I would suggest that most golfers on the costas are seniors and the exercise we get from golfing and being outside in the fresh air is very important to our health. Whilst now we are unable to leave our home except under special circumstances, we should try to do some exercise. If you live in an apartment space can be limited but I know that there is a lot of information out there showing exercises which can be done in your own home, which shows you how the use everyday objects/furniture that can keep the body active and flexible. I am also sure that some golfers are swinging their golf clubs in the garden and possibly practicing their putting.

Let us all hope that the measures being taken by the Government will prove beneficial sooner rather than later.

Best wishes to all golfers from the Montgo G.S. Committee
