Unease on campsites

- By Irena Bodnarec

THE FEELING of fear and helplessness continues on Benidorm’s campsites during this period of uncertainty.

Residents on Villamar – Benidorm’s biggest and most popular campsite have certainly dwindled and now number just over 280.

Those that remain have put life savings into their homes and state that they have nowhere to go back to in the UK and are adhering to the stringent lockdown rules.

One resident told Costa Blanca News: “We still haven’t been given the definitive answer that we need so that we can be allowed to get through this situation.

“We are fully aware that this is a touring site and could be asked to leave by the management.

“We accept that, but because we have paid the rent in advance – me for example until July 31, it would give us, in theory time to sell up and move on.

“We just want clarity and confirmation from the management that it is ok for us to stay, instead of this constant knot of worry that is there all the time.”

The police continue to patrol the campsite every few days.

Residents are accepting the strict rules and people are sticking to them.

Some were too scared to live with the uncertainty and booked flights back to the UK, which were then cancelled and so for them, this nightmare continues.

Although certain communal facilities have been closed – shower and toilet blocks, the onsite shop, laundry and rubbish collection continue, plus security, and the reception is still manned (albeit with much reduced hours).

Like everyone, they are hoping and praying for a swift but safe end to this situation.
