A TOTAL of 10,000 public sector workers will help ensure that food and medicines are available for vulnerable people in the Valencia region.

Regional councillor for justice and the interior Gabriela Bravo noted that her department has drawn up a special plan for town halls to give them ‘logistical, technical and human support’.

An emergency ‘army’ of workers made up of regional and local police officers, fire fighters, the civil protection (Protección Civil) volunteers and Red Cross personnel are available to help out.

Local authorities can ring a dedicated phone number to ask for the help they need.

They can do this for a number of services, explained Sra Bravo. Aid can be sought to deliver food and basic commodities to the elderly who live alone, people with mobility problems, residents in isolated areas and other vulnerable people.

The regional government will also help out with the transport of health and emergency products to town halls; cleaning and disinfecting of public places; delivery of protective clothing; and the provision of psychological aid via telephone and video calls for residents and council staff.

The regional government will also consider other requests made by town halls ‘which are feasible’ and within the remit of the plan.

Sra Bravo noted that town halls have been briefed on the initiative, which came into effect on Monday.

She added that town halls have been asked to dedicate staff to organise the relief effort in conjunction with the regional government.

“We are doing this to guarantee that the needs of the population, in particular the most vulnerable residents, are covered and that nobody is left out during this health crisis,” explained Sra Bravo.

As Costa Blanca News went to press yesterday (Thursday) the regional government reported that 196 town halls have asked for help under the plan.
