Royal Naval solidarity
THE ROYAL Naval Association (RNA) Torrevieja branch, at their AGM on March 4, continued with their ethos to support charities by making financial donations to the MABS Cancer Support Foundation in San Javier, Reach Out-Extiende la Mano for the homeless and in need, and the AFA Torrevieja Alzheimer’s association.
Every year at the AGM, the members nominate and vote on which charities are to receive the annual financial donations, which must be different ones from the previous year and must include local organisations.
The donation comes from funds collected by members during the year and is separate to the annual food and toiletries donations made at Christmas, which were to Reach Out and the Alimentos Solidarios soup kitchen in December 2019.
The branch shipmates are proud to maintain in a small way the naval tradition of welfare and support for those that are in peril or less fortunate.
Chairman steps down
PAUL Edwards stood down from the post of chairman of the Royal Naval Association Torrevieja branch at their AGM on March 4.
The members saluted Paul for steering the ship through the branch’s voyage over the last five years. The committee thanked him for having helped to increase its membership and social events over this period.
Paul said he had enjoyed being chairman but other commitments and illness had been limiting his attendance to meetings and social events so he decided it was unfair to continue when he knew he could no longer give the association his full attention.
“I feel sure the new chairman will bring the required enthusiasm to enable the association to continue to go from strength to strength,” he said.
His experience taught him that ‘communication is the key’ and the most important thing was to listen carefully to what everyone had to say before making a decision, ‘after removing emotions’.
“Needless to say, without the support of a good committee (thanks to Danny – the vicechairman) nothing would have been achieved," Paul noted.
“I am now looking forward to attending meetings and social events, including the menu del días, as a simple ‘Jolly Jack’ and will remain involved with the branch.”
All the branch shipmates bade him farewell as captain of the ship and welcomed him as a valued crew member of the branch.
