THE NUMBER of deaths of patients with coronavirus in the Valencia region has increased since Monday – but remains lower than the dark days of last week.

Councillor for health Ana Barceló reported yesterday (Wednesday) that 42 more people had passed away – compared with 35 in Tuesday’s report and 24 on Monday.

No clinical reason has been given for the increase.

The total number of deaths in the region now stands at 724, with 292 of these in Alicante province.

More than a quarter of the deaths (218) have occurred in residential care homes.

The number of new registered coronavirus patients in the region is also on the up – 212 compared with 109 reported on Tuesday but an improvement on the 316 from Sunday.

Despite this, the number of people being treated for the virus in hospital is falling, down from 1,887 on Tuesday to 1,714 yesterday.

Sr Barceló noted that there were 1,909 coronavirus patients on the wards on Monday.

The number of people being treated in intensive care is also going down – from 384 on Tuesday to 371 yesterday.

At the same time, the number of people recovering from the virus continues to increase.

On Tuesday Sra Barceló reported that a further 173 patients had been given a clean bill of health – and yesterday the number was 241, taking the total in the region to 1,344.

Of these 142 were in Castellón province, 469 in Alicante province and 733 in Valencia.

The number of healthcare professionals who have caught the virus continues to go up – on Tuesday it stood at 1,236 but had increased to 1,303 yesterday.

They are being replaced by volunteers and new recruits.

To date 2,314 non-active healthcare professionals have volunteered their services in the Valencia region.

On Wednesday there were a total of 7,655 coronavirus patients in the region.

Of these, 899 are in Castellón province, 2,803 in Alicante and 3,949 in Valencia, with four cases that have not yet been assigned.

More than 30,000 people have been tested for the coronavirus in the region but this is set to increase as the government tries to establish the ‘real picture’ around the country.
