Successful ' socially distanced' Iberian Open

-

So, against all odds we managed to hold our 23rd Iberian Open, despite the intense heat and the strict Covid guidelines that have been put in place. While the number of entries was lower than usual, the competition was just as fierce, as we welcomed bowlers from Benitachell, El Cid and Finca Guila to the Inn on the Green.

The Triples Final was played on Sunday afternoon and saw Nige Thomas, Greg Sperring and Alan Phillips hold off the challenge of Tony Walker, Trefor Evans and Velia Wood to win by 2310. The remaining three Finals were all played on

Monday and the Aussie Pairs was won by Jean McLaughlin and Chris Salter by 2013 against Penny and Jack Pym.

The Ladies Singles Final saw the return to the rink of Velia Wood and Penny Pym, who were both looking to make up for their defeats in the Triples and Aussie Pairs Finals respectively. Obviously only one of them could be victorious and it was Velia who held off a comeback from Penny to win by 2114.

The Men’s Singles saw Greg and Alan lock horns after sharing success in the Triples Final. On this occasion Alan came out on top and won by 2111. So, with two victories Alan was also named as ' player of the tournament'.

The Jávea Green captain, Keith Hamilton, congratulated his wife Dee Hamilton, the Jávea competition secretary, on organising a successful competition. Dee also thanked our sponsors, supporters, competitors and bar staff for playing their part in the competition.

Our photo shows all of the finalists plus sponsors from Telitec, Scottsdale Overseas and Bindley Properties. BeniConnect were unable to be with us for the presentation.
