Two arrested for the death of Benidorm homeless man

-

NATIONAL Police have arrested two men in Benidorm for their alleged involvement in the brutal beating and death of a young homeless man whose body was found last September in an open field on the outskirts of the town, reported a spokesman for the force.

One of the suspects, a 39year- old of Lithuanian nationality, is accused of alleged homicide and has been remanded in custody by a Benidorm court.

The other suspect, a man of Hungarian origin, has been charged with covering- up a crime and was released on bail.

In mid- September last year, the body of a young man was found in Benidorm’s Armanello district, which is a semirural area between the Pueblo market and the town’s discotheque strip. An autopsy revealed the man’s death had occurred in a violent manner so the National Police launched a homicide investigation.

Officers discovered the victim was a homeless person who had arrived in Benidorm just two days before he died. They also identified the people with whom he had lived during those two days. After taking statements from all of them, they reached the conclusion that the fatal events leading to his death occurred at dawn on September 14, when the victim was at the home of one of the main suspects, located close to where his body was found.

With the witness statements, footage from security cameras in the area and other information they collected, the investigation focused on two people, one of whom was seen pushing a trolley containing what could have been the body of the victim on the night of the alleged homicide.

Officers set up a surveillance operation that ended with the location and arrest of the alleged culprit, who had allegedly brutally beaten the victim to death.

On searching the home where the events allegedly took place, various items of clothing with biological remains were found.

The arrested man was known in the area for his violent behaviour, and had a police record for various violent crimes.

The other detained person, who allegedly covered- up the homicide, tried at all times to divert and obstruct the investigation, added the police spokesman.
