Virtual run for breast cancer

- By Barry Wright

THE FOURTH Orihuela walk and run in support of World Breast Cancer Day will this year be a virtual event that takes place from October 31November 1.

Announcing the event, councillor for sport Víctor Bernabéu revealed that the activity goes under the theme Corre Por Mí Orihuela 2020 ( run for me Orihuela 2020).

“This year, due to the Covid- 19 situation, we are going to hold the fourth edition of this race and walk in virtual fashion, in order to avoid any crowds in the streets and to be able to ensure distancing in a race as popular as this, where last year we had in excess of 3,000 participants,” said the councillor.

The event will be non- competitive and participants are required to either walk or run a distance of five kilometres along a course of their choice.

Race participants will be able to upload their race data to the app RockTheSport, which will be in charge of collating the finishing results.

“Participants will be able to download and print a race number, as well as interact through social networks with the hashtag # CorrepormiOri huela, which will give more visibility to the race and walk,” said the president of the event organisers, Club Tragamillas.

Registration through www. tragamillas. org costs € 5, and is open until October 30.

The Orihuela branch of cancer charity AECC invited everyone ‘ to participate in this race and virtual march, to dress in pink T- shirts and walk with them’.

“We also encourage people to decorate their balconies with pink symbols during the month of October ( Breast Cancer Awareness Month),” they said.

From November 2- 6 there will be a virtual raffle, for which all the registered participants will be entered in a draw to win a sports jacket and 10 masks.
