Hospitals hit by new Covid19 infections

More people are being treated on intensive care wards in the Valencia region

THE NUMBER of active cases of Covid19 in the Valencia region has nearly doubled in the last two weeks.

The figure reported by regional councillor for health Ana Barceló on Wednesday was 10,441 – compared to 5,368 on October 14.

Just on Wednesday, 1,606 new infections were recorded, with 822 people deemed to be cured.

The rapid rise in cases is hitting regional hospitals.

A total of 1,061 people with Covid19 were being treated on wards in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón on Wednesday compared with 735 seven days previously.

Of those patients, 158 are on intensive care wards – up by 43 in seven days.

The figures show that 66 people with the coronaviru­s are being treated on ICU wards in Alicante province.

A further 58 people have died of Covid19 in the Valencia region in the last seven days, taking the overall death toll to 1,801 ( 622 in Alicante province).

Sra Barceló reported 10 new small outbreaks in Alicante province on Wednesday, which had come to light in the previous 24 hours.

Of these, four were in Elche – all of social origin, with a total number of 19 people infected.

Elche has now become the worst affected municipali­ty in Alicante province.

Active cases, which numbered 442 last Wednesday, have gone up to 605 in seven days.

Other minor outbreaks were recorded in Orihuela – one in a school with five cases and another of social origin with six.

In Santa Pola seven cases have sprung from the same social contact.

‘ Social origin’ is also listed as the cause of three cases in Alcoy and five in Alicante city.

In Ibi, three cases have come from the same workplace.

Local figures

In Orihuela the number of cases continues to rise – up by 15 to 218.

Torrevieja has also seen an increase – up by 22 to 63; while cases in Rojales remain low, down from 11 to nine.

Covid cases in the Marina Alta and La Safor have more than doubled in the past week.

Oliva has 15 cases, and numbers have rocketed in Tavernes de la Valldigna, with last week’s total of seven up to 28.

Gandia was on the verge of being Covidfree a fortnight ago, but in the past week another

67 have been diagnosed, with 112 now active.

A spike in Denia has taken the total from 11 to 37, cases in Calpe have doubled ( now eight) and in Alcalalí ( now four).

A total of 10 of the Marina Alta’s 31 towns and villages have reported increases this week – including Jávea, Jalón,

Orba, El Verger, Beniarbeig, Benissa – and Tormos, untouched until now, has been hit with its first case.

On the plus side, 17 towns in the Marina Alta have no cases at all, meaning the 89 positives – up from 47 last week are split between 14 municipali­ties.
