Council proposes mixed companies to run public services
TORREVIEJA mayor Eduardo Dolón gave a press conference on Friday to explain that his council is aiming to set up mixed public/ private companies to operate services in the municipality.
Sr Dolón stated that the council finance department had told him that the local authority will see its spending capacity reduced by € 6.4 million next year.
He noted that the proposal is designed to ensure that the quality of services does not slide during 2021.
Council officers have now been asked to examine the possibility of creating mixed companies to run services in their departments.
Sr Dolón noted that these partnerships could be for
frontline services such as the multimillioneuro rubbish collection and street cleaning contract which is pending
renewal – and the town’s bus service.
He also highlighted the cleaning of municipal buildEduardo ings and schools; and maintenance of sports centres and parks and gardens as other possibilities.
Sr Dolón noted that the world had changed and the council has to be ‘ prudent’ in this new scenario. Without referring directly to the pending renewal of the rubbish contract – the most lucrative one handed out by the town hall – he said that the council auditor had suggested that they would have to reverse adjudication procedures which are currently in process.
This would be for very expensive contracts which could compromise future municipal budgets.
“We have to adapt to the reality of the situation,” explained Sr Dolón.
