Green jobs boost predicted

Legislation to enshrine the right to ‘ generate and consume energy’

THE VALENCIA government’s drive to convert the region to solar energy will create 3,000 jobs, according to councillor for the ecological transition, Mireia Mollà.

Sra Mollà highlighted their new climate change and ecological transition law ‘ which will speed up the implementation of renewable energy projects’.

She made her comments at the seventh edition of the solar energy forum which was held by video conference this year due to the pandemic.

The councillor outlined the content of the new legislation which, she noted, received preliminary approval in August but is still not on the statute books.

It is designed to encourage private companies and investors to set up solar plants and wind farms in the Valencia region.

Sra Mollà explained that several different regional departments have worked together to set out a ‘ pathway’ for a 16fold increase in energy production from the sun and a fourfold increase in wind capacity.

This is to meet two important goals – reducing the production of socalled greenhouse gases by 40% by 2030 and move to a ‘ zero carbon’ economy ( no fossil fuel combustion for energy) by 2050.

According to Sra Mollà, this will also reduce the region’s ‘ energy dependency’ and ensure that power to supply households, businesses and industry is produced

in the region.

At the same time, she noted that they are aiming to make energy production

‘ more democratic’ and enshrine the right to ‘ generate and consume energy’.
