A little poetic light relief for golfers missing golf

- By Fiona Sankey

SO where were you when you got the call?

It’s ‘Lockdown Golf’ again with no games at all!

We were out on the course when we got the shout,

Make the most of it peeps, it’s your last day out!

“That’s it for now folks” was the news from the pro shop,

The tees are now closed and the golf has to stop.

Our days out with no golf now won’t be much fun,

I can still go out for a walk in the fresh air and sun

…but everywhere I go there’s too many folk there, they stare…

I have to cross roads to avoid people in masks.

They can’t sit in bars so they're drinking gin from their flasks.

I can visit the shop and walk round the aisles...for exercise..

I can pass by my friends, can’t stop, can’t talk and can’t see their smiles.

I can buy up the eggs, the butter the flour,

I can bake all the cakes and eat them any old hour.

Hope it’s not back to those old days, those sad days in May 2020,

Where we walked round the block, twice a day was plenty!

I was just getting better with my brand new putter.

I’d learnt to hole one, at least a 10 footer.

My golf was improving, I’d just had a cut.

I was winning the prizes, came out of that rut.

I want to be out there again, on fairways and greens,

And chipping or chopping that ball from the trees.

I’m putting that white ball so smoothly, in dreams!

These restrictions now placed on all of us golfers,

Means we’ve got to stay in, our biggest fear that

Without those tri-weekly games were going to get fat!

We all know the rules, we’ve been here before,

But as soon as that course opens I’m out of that door.

My golf clubs are ready, my shoes they’re all clean,

I just hope I don’t have to wait until I’ve had the vaccine!?
