PLANS are to be drawn up to enable the historic heart of Teulada preserve its protected status and make it compatible with 21st century life.

The once walled gothic area – described as a ‘jewel’ of the Marina Alta town – was declared an asset of cultural interest back in 2007.

By winning its ‘BIC’ status, it gained legal protection.

However, a special plan for the properties inside the historic centre was not drawn up at the time, something Teulada Moraira town hall is determined to correct. The restrictive nature of the protection order presents a challenge to the local authority, but the plan was described as ‘an essential tool for the revitalisation of the area’ establishing urban regulations to respect the original architecture and historic value while giving flexibility to address the needs of residents.

Councillor for town planning Vicen Ferrando said the plan was important to revitalise

the historic centre and make it a functional space for both residents and visitors to Teulada.

He added: “We have to be respectful of the historical heritage and at the same time

take into account the needs of the time we live in.”

Mayor Rosa Vila commented: “The writing of this project is the first step towards making our historic centre a space for coexistence and enjoyment by our residents and visitors.

“The objective is clear; we have a historic jewel that we have to maintain for the benefit of Teulada Moraira.”
