Cava call comes from Requena
THE REGION’S only cava-producing town wants its name on the international wine map – and, luckily, authorities agree.
Requena, in the western hinterland of the province of Valencia, is already known nationally for its Utiel-Requena wines, but cava being a fixture on supermarket shelves across the continent means its fame would borders.
At the moment, the fizzy wine produced in the region is known as ‘Valencian cava’, but given that no other town makes it in any of the three provinces, it is now seeking to be known as ‘Requena cava’.
Regional agriculture and rural development councillor Mireia Mollà said it was perright start to transcend fectly reasonable for Requena to want to boast a protected designation of origin (PDO).
She said she would back the town’s application to the regulatory council.
Whenever creators want to acquire a designation of origin certificate for their product, it has to be approved by the regulatory council and, if granted, is effectively a patent or copy– in the same way as feta cheese or Greek yoghurt.
In wine terms, Spain’s most international example of this is La Rioja. Sra Mollà’s department has met with representatives from Requena’s cavaproducing community, and agreed to support their cause with the national government’s agriculture ministry.
BENIDORM mayor Toni Pérez wants two important healthcare projects to be declared ‘strategic’ in a bid to get the schemes underway.
This decision comes after regional president Ximo Puig announced the streamlining of procedures regarding health in which projects considered ‘strategic’ would be speeded up.
Sr Pérez highlighted the need for the expansion of the district hospital in Villajoyosa that serves the Benidorm area and the new health centre in the Rincón de Loix area.
The proposal will be made at the next full council meeting at Benidorm town hall.
The mayor pointed out that both are necessary to serve the community and have been on the agenda for several years, pointing out that this current health pandemic has only intensified the urgency.
The land for the building of the new health centre in the centre of Benidorm was transferred to the regional health department back in 2017 – a 3,558m2 plot on Calle Zamora, next to the Antonio López football pitches.
