A HOUSE fire in Benissa on Sunday was the third in the Marina Alta in less than a week, according to emergency services.

Firefighters were called out to a single-storey villa next to the railway station at around 06.30, and managed to save the building, although the roof and wooden beams in the porch were completely destroyed.

The villa had been occupied by squatters and numerous used tyres and old electrical appliances were heaped up in the doorway. Nobody was on the premises at the time.

Two other fires earlier in the week, both in Jesús Pobre, led to extensive damage, but no injuries. The first was on Wednesday when a country villa in the Alqueria de Gasent area, close to the town centre and surrounded by vineyards, burst into flames at 11.35.

Although the damage was not visible from the outside, huge clouds of smoke billowed from the windows, and the inside was reduced to a charred wreck.

The following afternoon, the fire brigade was back in the village when a tool shed went up in smoke just off the La Xara road.

It was made of wood and was razed to the ground, although the flames did not reach the main house.

In all cases, the fire brigade stopped the flames from spreading, and nobody was hurt.

THE RED Cross Benidorm branch has taken delivery of a new ambulance offering basic life support.

The Peugeot Boxer L3H2 is equipped with a monitor, oxygen and semi-automatic defibrillator.

Director Maria Carmen García presented the new vehicle to the mayor Toni Pérez.

Also present on Tuesday morning at the town hall square were councillor for health Mónica Gómez and councillor for social services Angela Llorca.
