Results of the captain’s drive-in (a waltz) competition held in Oliva Nova Golf on Tuesday, March 2
A GREY day met us at Oliva Nova, the 29 players and the three ghosts, for our captain Derek Lindley’s 'drive in'. Some of us haven’t seen each other or played golf since the January 5 when we had our last game. The district lockdown was decreed for Oliva because of the rising Covid-19 figures. We hope that in the rolling two weeks the restrictions will gradually be lifted and we will be able to get back to a bit more ‘normal’.
We know for a fact that all of us golfers had been praying for a change in the weather forecast as right up to the eve of this day there was a 100% risk of rain. Now we know that all our gardens need the rain and yours especially Derek, that marvellous veggie plot needs as much water as it can get, I expect, (read all about this in the Costa Blanca News… Derek is our own Monty Don on the Costa Blanca). The weather gods must have heard our pleading and we were delighted no rain fell for the whole day.
It was a pleasure for some of the members to meet Derek on the first tee along with his playing partners, all past captains; Bill Pike, Brendan Young and Stevie Patton. I expect Derek was hoping they could offer their advice and wisdom not only in the golf game itself, but on how to deal with those pesky Pego golf people when need be! Derek said they did offer some wisdom on captaincy, but not much on golf, Derek’s team were near the bottom on the day, but he did score a creditable 36 points
With the present Covid-19 rules and restrictions it means no nearest the pins, no twos’ awards (although there were no twos recorded) and no prize giving in the club house, which is closed at present. So there will be no glory in hearing the results with friends but Brendan Young guessed the drive-in distance of 185 yards correctly. A great drive Derek, who said he had been dreaming that he had an air shot! Derek must be so proud and that ball tracker video that recorded that moment for Sky TV will be played forever in Derek’s mind I expect.
On the day the top three winning teams were:
1st – Ian Robertson, Peter Cornes, Paul Trigwell and Dave O’Conner – 79 points
2nd – Roy Jones, Jan Jones, Mick Farmer and C Ghost – 77 points
3rd – Charlie Miller, Fiona Sankey, Celia Cronin and Colin Foster – 76 points
Our handicap secretary Penny Barden is having a hip replacement this week and although we won’t be seeing her for golf for a few weeks we know that as she recovers, she will be watching our scores for those handicap cuts.
Next week we will be playing a combined pairs competition. If you would like to play, please email penelopebarden @gmail.com
Pego Society meet every Tuesday at Oliva Nova golf club, and if you would like to play please send an email to Penny Barden at pegohandicap sec@gmail.com, and we would love to see you.
