Work gives heart to town

BENITACHELL has a new pedestrian street aimed to make the ‘heart’ of the town safer and more accessible to residents.

Calle Lleibeig links the central thoroughfare of Calle La Pau with Plaza de les Pesqueres – a square which is already earmarked for redevelopment as a recreational space – home to the health centre, social centre, and school of music.

The new access, which followed the demolition of an old building, was funded with a provincial government grant of almost €90,000, and has been landscaped and has new street lighting. It is part of plans to harmonise the centre of Benitachell and make it a ‘pleasant’ place for all.

WORK is due to begin next month to end the risk of a landslide behind the harbour at Jávea.

Valencia port authority is picking up the €1.8 million bill.

The emergency work will protect the road around the port and homes on the slopes of La Caleta, according to the authorities.

It involves consolidating the slope as historically there have been a number of land slips in the area (see photo).

Director general of ports María Luisa Martínez has met with mayor José Chulvi and engineers to discuss the project and other improvements to jetties in the northern dock of the harbour itself.

Work to stabilise the high ground begins in April and is likely to take six months.

It will involve putting in gabions and anchored walls – as well as landscaping the completed structures to lessen the visual impact, explained Sra Martínez.
