Protection for swimmers

- By Dave Jones djones@cbnews.es

A THREE-kilometre-long swimming area is to be created off the Alicante coast.

A spokesman for Alicante city hall reported that buoys will be installed to mark out an area in the sea off Cabo de las Huertas, which lies to the north of the city centre.

He explained that their idea is to protect divers and swimmers by creating specific channels for boats to reach the shore.

The spokesman stated that a large number of divers frequent the area off the Huertas cape and they had asked city hall to take action over vessels such as speed boats and jet skis which had been operating close to the shore.

The buoys will be positioned 150 metres from the coast, with each one separated by a distance of 50 metres.

A total of €9,200 is being spent on the safety measure, which will allow city hall to

create similar swimming zones at other popular areas.

The purchase of 540 buoys will see them also mark off zones at Playa de San Juan and La Albufereta, as well as creating access channels for boats in other zones.

The scheme forms part of

the €227,942 spending plan to improve services at the city’s beaches.

The spokesman said they are creating an access area at Playa del Postiguet for people with mobility problems and the visually impaired.

The contract has been handed to the companies Excavacions i Obres Rodà S.L and ObraSub Lorente Pomar S.L for a period of two years.

They have been charged with carrying out conservation and cleaning at the beaches, as well as safety measures.

A TOTAL of 3,626 mortgage foreclosures occurred in 2020 in the Valencia region – an increase of 42% on 2019.

The figures were supplied by the Regional Supreme Court (TSJ).

This was the first year on year increase after five years of continuous decreases. The total is the third highest in the country, only behind Cataluña with 4,643 and Andalucía with 3,729.

Alicante province recorded 1,448 of these foreclosures, compared to 1,754 in Valencia and just 434 in Castellón.

Nevertheless, the number of evictions carried out in the region’s courts in 2020 dropped 39.1% to 4,501, continuing a downward trend since 2015, noted a TSJ spokesman.

These evictions do not only affect homes but also second homes and other types of buildings as well, explained the spokesman.

Of the total, 2,765 cases were under the regional law on renting (LAU), which is down 38.4% on 2019; 1,620 corresponded to mortgage foreclosures (down 38.5%); and the other 116 were for other reasons.

This put the region in top place for evictions due to mortgage foreclosures, followed by Andalucía with 1,349 and Cataluña with 1,069; while for rental cases Valencia was third with Cataluña top on 4,211, followed by Andalucía on 2,942.

The TSJ also revealed that 1,809 businesses in the Valencia region applied for suspension of payments in 2020, 7.1% up on the year before, and 14,743 cases claiming unfair dismissal were presented, an increase of 9.6%.
