Allotments for urbanisations

- By Alex Watkins awatkins@cbnews.es

ALLOTMENTS are being prepared so that residents will be able grow their own fruit and vegetables in San Fulgencio.

A total of 68 plots of sizes varying between six and 26 square metres will be available in an area of municipal land totalling 3,200m2 which is located in the urbanisations between Calles Galicia, Rosales, Dublín and Belgrado.

The work is being carried out by the tap water company Hidraqua at a cost of €79,088, while the town hall is preparing a bylaw to regulate how these plots will be awarded and can be used.

Councillor for public works Francisco Molero noted that the bylaw is complex and that as soon as it has been approved they will announce when the application period opens.

“The project will give residents an opportunity to participate in an ecological agriculture experience, which avoids the use of chemical products and has a composting area to create fertiliser,” he said.

“It will also be a space for everyone in San Fulgencio to meet and relax in the open air, as it will have a pergola, fountains, picnic tables and parking for bicycles, so that everyone who wants to can enjoy this setting.”

Hidraqua technician Elena García noted that the allotments will use water responsibly and efficiently, with an irrigation system that makes maximum use of natural resources.

They will also be adapted to a method of cultivation known as ‘parades en Crestall’, which she explained enables crops to be grown in the minimum amount of space using as little water as possible and no pesticides.
