Old leisure centre to be demolished
THE DEMOLITION order for the former Eduard Alted leisure and residential complex in San Juan has been signed by Isabel Castelló, director of the regional heritage department.
Sra Castelló visited the town hall and the surroundings of the old complex, located next to the sports centre, together with San Juan mayor, Jaime Albero, and those responsible for the future works.
She stressed that this action meets a historical demand of the town and its residents, given that the deterioration of the building since it was abandoned in 2006 had become a ‘safety and health problem’.
Ownership of the complex, which was in use up to September 30, 2006, was transferred from the state to the regional government.
Since that date, Sra Castelló said the building has remained empty and has been the target of numerous acts of vandalism. Thus, the regional government and the council agreed a project to include the demolition of all constructed areas as well as the cleaning and clearing of the 11,200 square metre plot and its subsequent perimeter fencing.
A company will now proceed to complete the demolition of the facilities and the elimination of all elements containing asbestos, as well as the levelling of the land (including the filling of the swimming pool basin), which will be done by crushing the inert rubble from the residence itself, a sustainable solution for rubble disposal.
