Pedestrian friendly town centre project unveiled
Local authority aims to ‘improve everyone’s quality of life’
INVESTMENTS in public works totalling almost €3.5 million this year have been announced by Rojales town hall.
They include resurfacing roads, replacing drinking water and sewage pipes, improving pedestrian access on streets in the historic part of the town, and redevelopment of the Malecón del Soto public park, explained councillor for works and services Jesús Martínez on Monday.
The objective is to ‘improve everyone’s quality of life’ by increasing road safety in the old town and improving its connections with places of great ethnographic interest such as the Cuevas del Rodeo cave neighbourhood.
The projects will be paid for with a combination of municipal funds and subsidies from other public administrations, he said.
Some jobs are already underway or about to start, including resurfacing of roads in Los Barrios industrial estate in Heredades, as well as its main access road, the CV-95.
This was where Sr Martínez and other councillors presented the 2022 infrastructure plan.
At the same time the project has started to resurface and improve the pavements and tap water pipes of 23 streets in the municipality. ‘Calles’ are being redeveloped, with the water and sewer pipes being completely replaced, and the pavement and road put on a single level to make access easier for pedestrians.
In February, work is due to begin on redeveloping Calles Calvario Viejo and Rafaél Aráez, both also known as the CV-905 and its continuation to the Plaza de España in the town centre, where accessibility will also be improved and new asphalt laid.
Another 12 streets are going to be resurfaced, and the water and sewer pipes replaced on another seven, Calles Castillo, Horno, Sol, Cuarto, Nueva, Cuesta and Cecilio Aráez.
These last streets will also
be remodelled to put the pavements and roads on the same level because they are in the oldest part of the town and are very narrow.
Furthermore, Calle Limonar, which provides access to the municipal sports centre and is one of the busiest streets in the municipality, will be given a new layer of asphalt.
Two additional ‘very important projects’ are due to be put out to tender – the redevelopment of the last unfinished
stretch of Avenida Justo Quesada, and the Malecón del Soto park.
The first connects the town centre with La Marquesa golf course, various urbanisations and an industrial estate.
The second project will affect a green space next to the River Segura, which has children’s playgrounds and is used as a venue for numerous cultural activities and fiestas, added Sr Martínez.
