Cash pumped into school building plan

- By Alex Watkins

CALPE has been awarded €12.7 million by the regional education department to build a second secondary school.

This makes a total of €19.7m awarded for improvements to seven educational centres in the municipality, as part of the regional Plan Edificant school building programme.

Since this requires town halls to put the jobs out to tender, the council now has to start preparing the tender procedure for the contract to draw up the construction project for the new school.

Calpe’s secondary school ‘Nº2’ will have three floors with 20 classrooms, six for Bachillerato studies and a specific block for professional training in maritime/fishing work, which includes facilities for making nets and naval machinery, first aid, maritime safety and firefighting on boats.

It will be built, to low energy consumption and modern sustainability specifications, on a 16,250-square-metre plot in the Gargasindi industrial estate, with 9,344m2 of constructed space and 8,365m2 of open air surface with sport courts, a playground and an allotment.

This school is one of 41 projects to improve and construct educational centres in the Marina Alta, for a total of €67.6m.

Almost finished in Pilar

Work on the new secondary school being built in Pilar de la Horadada is scheduled to be finished in March, thus enabling it to open in time for the 2022-2023 educational year.

Mayor José María Pérez Sánchez and education councillor Pedro Miguel Moya Albaladejo visited the 15,000 square metre site in Torre de la Horadada, between Calle Los Ángeles, Calle Los Pescadores and Avenida de la Comunidad Valenciana.

The school will have places for 560 pupils, ‘resolving the problem of lack of space at the existing Thiar school’, said Sr Moya.

The company Joca Inginiera y Construcciones was hired with a budget of over €7.7 million, funded by the Plan Edificant programme.

There will be four classrooms for Bachillerato studies, including science and technology rooms, workshops for professional training, a café, a gym, two sport courts, a play area, a covered section of playground, an allotment, a garden and a car park for personnel.
