TORREVIEJA council has released provisional population figures for the municipality which show that Britons still make up the largest foreign community in the town – and the numbers have gone up over the last three years.

Out of the 87,901 residents counted, there are 5,236 people originally from the UK living in Torrevieja, according to the data from the municipal register (padrón).

In 2019 the town hall reported that there were 4,806 Britons officially residing in the municipality.

A council spokesman noted that there are 123 different nationalities on the ‘padrón’.

The British are followed by the Russians (4,484), Ukrainians (3,203) ‘who have considerably increased their presence’, Colombians (2,377), Moroccans (2,271), Romanians (1,580), Bulgarians (1,526), Swedes (1,374), Belgians (1,206), Germans (1,038), Italians (1,016), Chinese (844), Algerians (720) and Norwegians (694).

The municipality is also becoming less Spanish.

In 2019, of the 85,231 inhabitants – 58.8% were natives and 41.2% from other countries, while in 2022 Spaniards make up 56.6% of the total, with the foreign population rising to 43.4%.

The council figures show that in 2022 there are more women than men – 51.8% compared with 49.2%.

The most numerous age group is the 40 to 60s with 26,905; followed by the 60 to 80s (21,375); with 5,103 residents aged between 80 and 100.

The council noted that there are 25 people aged 100 and over living in Torrevieja – eight of them men and 17 women.

The overall figures show that Torrevieja is the fifth largest town in the Valencia region in terms of population – behind only Valencia, Alicante, Castellón and Elche.

In 1990 Torrevieja had just 23,192 inhabitants, which had more than doubled to 50,189 by the year 2000.
