Anniversary at Arts Society Marina Alta

- By David Glover

A VERY happy and safe New Year from the chair and committee, and a special welcome to the fifth anniversary of the Arts Society Marina Alta. We begin 2022 as much as we left 2021, but with the anticipation that we will return to more normal ways of operating, whilst still being wary and thoughtful of the ongoing effects and restrictions demanded by Covid, including the use of the relevant passports.

Our first meeting of the new season will be on February 3, again at Salones Canor Teulada and will be preceded by our annual general meeting. We invite all members to attend as scheduled, guests will be welcome but cannot participate in our agenda.

Doors open at 09.30 for registration, and coffee will be available before the AGM and the presentation begins at 11.00. All proceedings will be held in accordance with the obligatory Covid rules on the day.

The first presentation of our new 2022 season will be 'The Impressionist Revolution' - lecture by Lydia Bauman.

It is difficult to imagine today - when looking at scenes of sundappled landscapes and pleasurable pastimes of elegantly dressed Parisians captured by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Morisot in late 19th century - that Impressionism was originally a derisive term and the Impressionists regarded as revolutionaries by both the gallery going public and critics alike.

Lydia Bauman will put that revolutionary movement in the context of the traditional tastes of the day and examine the social changes, the transformation of Paris under new design by Baron Hausmann and the various inventions and discoveries (such as paints in tubes, the portable camera and the colour wheel) which made Impressionism possible. She will also examine the role of the visionary art dealer, Durand Rouel in supporting the Impressionists.

The lecture offers a fascinating glimpse into Parisian society at the end of the 19th century, a look at some of the most ravishing and much-loved paintings we are likely to encounter.
