Foundation recovers tonnes of rubbish
THE ESTRELLA Levante foundation has recovered 25 tonnes of rubbish from the seabed of the Mar Menor.
The initiative took place during the months of May and December and saw three boats and four divers identifying and cleaning areas of the inland sea that were affected by rubbish.
The December action, which took place in collaboration with a group of volunteers from the San Pedro del Pinatar fishermen’s guild resulted in the recovery of 13 tonnes of rubbish.
Estrella Levante foundation said that the cleaning project had taken place thanks to the collaboration of local, regional and national administrations, and various associations.
Its objective was to identify the areas most affected by watercourses (ramblas) entering the sea or by the effects of the devastating September 2019 storms, such as at Los Urrutias, Los Nietos, Los Alcázares and the island of Perdiguera.
The two campaigns recovered a wide variety of rubbish and waste, including sunken boats, plastics, scrap and even a photo booth that was blown into the sea during
the storm.
Estrella de Levante technical director and Estrella foundation area environmental and sustainability assessor, Juan Antonio López said: “With our action we want to do our bit towards the environmental recovery of the Mar Menor and we want it to have a bandwagon effect, so that other companies and associations join our initiative. It is not only about removing waste, but also about encouraging the creation of a green ring around the Mar Menor.”
Estrella de Levante foundation manager Yayo Delgado noted: “The aim of the foundation is to promote actions that have a positive impact on our environment and society and with this action, in addition to helping; we want to promote ways of collaborating with the administrations.”
The foundation has informed that throughout 2022 it will coordinate further similar actions.
