ON Tuesday, January 25, a brighter day than of late, with no threat of rain, it was the new captain’s drive-in, so Penny Barden the new Pego captain for 2022 nervously approached the tee. We have pictures of Penny and her team, and also of her driving off. There were lots of bets on the distance she would drive and Jan Jones was the nearest with 119 metres, so well-done Jan. Penny was a bit worried because she had recently recovered from surgery on her hand, she needn’t have worried her drive went straight down the middle.
A total of 25 players teed off on the day’s waltz competition, we would have had more but some had to cancel because they had tested positive for the latest variant of Covid, which reduced the field. Nevertheless, we had some cracking games. It was good to welcome Troy Stanley as a new member, and he did okay, he was not phased playing with the regulars of Danny, Paul and Peter, and finished in the second-place team.
We had two twos on the day, the prize pot being shared by Peter Ketteringham and David Blakeley. Nearest the pins went to Jean Taylor on the fifth with here approach shot being nearest. It was good to welcome Jean back on her return from the UK. On hole 16 the honours went to Danny Herron, who just pipped David Blakeley to take the prize. The winning team on the day, albeit only by a point, was the immediate past captain Derek
Lindley, the pressure is obviously off now and he can return to playing some good golf, (he hopes).
After the game Penny announced her charity for the year is the Preventorio Infantil de Gandia, the children’s orphanage in Gandia, and fines would be levied on any errant shot that finished in either bunker on the 14th hole. Next week’s competition is the Copa de Escocia which will be a medal competition. If you would like to play, please email the handicap secretary at pego handicapsec@gmail.com
