IT was a pretty fresh start at Oliva Nova Golf on last Tuesday, but it soon warmed up for the day’s waltz competition that’s 1,2,3 in case you didn’t know one score to count, two scores to count, three scores to count, and then the format is repeated. We had 31 players so it was a relatively full field.

Did you know that the date on which we played, 22/02/22, is both a palindrome and an ambigram (a date that can be read back to front and upside down).

It was quite a close finish, with only five points separating the first and fourth-placed teams, although the winners did finish three points clear of the second placed team

The winning teams were:

1. Paul Sankey, Danny Heron, Troy Stanley and Keith Worrall – 85 points

2. Derek Lindley, Brendan Young, Donna Green and Peter Hanks – 82 points

There were three twos recorded on the day, all of which were on the 16th hole, and the prize money was shared by Malcolm Cannon, Alan Simpson and Ruth Strasser.

Nearest the pins went to Malcolm Cannon who beat the field to finish closest on the 16th. And, with his second shot to the fifth, the nearest the pin in two prize went to Martin Gates, who pipped his mate Brendan Young.

There were also two knock out matches: Fiona Sankey versus David Blakeley, Fiona came out on top with a 4&2 win; the second was Steve Patton versus Viv Bacon, where Steve came out on top 4&3. This means that Fiona and Steve will be going through to the next round.

Next week’s competition is an individual Stableford. If you would like to play, please email the handicap secretary at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com
