OBERTURA. MÁS ALLÁ DE LOS MAPAS
Until May 29: Obertura. Más allá de los mapas’ (overture. Beyond maps) featuring works from of collection of Michael Jenkins and Javier Romero, at Alicante museum of contemporary art (MACA). This first exhibition of works from the collection features a total of 70 of the 291 pieces. MACA is situated at Plaza de Santa María 3. ALICANTE IN HARMONY. EMILIO VARELA AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES
Permanent exhibition: Featuring works by Emilio Varela, Lorenzo Aguirre, Rigoberto Soler, Vicente Albarranch and Gastón Castelló. To highlight Varela’s works the exhibition curators selected paintings containing the province’s ‘luminous landscapes, recognisable urban views of the city of Alicante, extraordinary self-portraits, interiors, still lifes and portraits’ marked by the artist’s ‘original and unmistakable style’. THE 19TH CENTURY. THE COLLECTION IN THE LIGHT
Permanent: ‘The 19th century. The collection in the light’ exhibition at Alicante museum of fine art (MUBAG). Including eight works from the Prado museum in Madrid. Containing 75 paintings and sculptures of diverse themes which are being displayed in a renovated space within MUBAG, and pays homage to 30 artists linked to Alicante province. EBERHARD SCHLOTTER
Until June: Schlotter foundation exhibition entitled Centenario-Etapas de su vida artística (centenary-stages of his artistic life) at Casa Toni el Fuster exhibition space. The display contains works from the collection of the family of the German artist, Eberhard Schlotter, and is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of his birth. A catalogue has been produced to complement the exhibition, which is open Tuesday to Friday from 10.00-14.00 and 18.00-21.00, and Saturdays from 10.30-13.30

HYPER-SEXUALISATION OF THE BREAST
Until April 24: Exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Sara Acosta called ‘the hyper-sexualisation of the breast of a woman’ at the Sala Muralla Carlos III. The project brings together ‘protest paintings that represent control over this part of the body and what can arise from it’. FROM CARTAGENA TO CARAVACA DE LA CRUZ
Until May 30: Exhibition 'De Cartagena a Caravaca de la Cruz' (from Cartagena to Caravaca de la Cruz) at the exhibition space in Cartagena Roman theatre museum. It follows in the footsteps of the apostle Santiago (James) from Santa Lucía port in Cartagena to Caravaca, following a pilgrimage by the artist Zacarías Cerezo, which is retold through a series of watercolour paintings. Until October 1: Muralla Púnica (Punic wall) museum is hosting an exhibition about the ‘world’s most famous archaeologist’, Indiana Jones. ‘En busca de los tesoros perdidos’ (in search of the lost treasures) contains more than 100 original pieces and exact replicas that have appeared in the Indiana Jones films

OJOS ROJOS INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL
Until April 24: Fourth Ojos Rojos international festival of Spanish and Ibero-American photography is taking place in various streets and cultural spaces in Jávea, Denia and Jesús Pobre. This edition of the festival has Chile as its invited country, and one of the objectives is to ‘reclaim public spaces as places for encounters and reflection through photography’s diversity and various genres’. ORIHUELA PLANTS AND THEIR TRADITIONAL USES
Until May 29: ‘Plants and their traditional uses’, an exhibition by the Orihuela biologist Gonzalo Escudero at the town’s Palmeral interpretation centre (CIP). The exhibition raises awareness of 20 varieties of plant that were used in the past and, in some cases, remain in use today for artisanal purposes or for their medicinal properties. VALENCIA MAR MENOR EXHIBITION
Permanent exhibition: The flora and fauna of the Mar Menor is on display in a permanent exhibition at the oceanographic centre in Valencia’s city of science and arts.
The exhibition features examples of seahorses, garfish, gobios, whitebait, Spanish toothcarp, pejerrey and fan mussels. For more information

VILLAJOYOSA LA VILA IN OTHER TIMES
Until further notice: Photographic exhibition looking at the evolution of Villajoyosa on display on the exterior of the town’s historic Chalet de Centella. It is dedicated to the town’s seafaring history, and features images that enable viewers to appreciate its development since the end of the 19th century and the evolution of its fishing industry
