The Manfreds coming to Benidorm

- By Irena Bodnarec

THE ONGOING unique collaboration between Benidorm Palace and the stars of yesteryear continues with The Manfreds – a group made up of four original members of the 1960’s pop group Manfred Mann. The band performed at the palace back in 2016 to a sold out audience and will be back again for a one-night special on Sunday, April 24.

The group, which formed in 1991, sees both vocalists Paul Jones and Mike d’Abo on stage together – reunited after their paths crossed back in 1966. Throughout the 70s they both led separate careers, until one fateful day in 1991 when they came together to celebrate Tom McGuinness’ 50th birthday and decided to reform, calling themselves The Manfreds.

Tom, basically the man responsible for The Manfreds’ evolution, spoke to CBN and recalled the group’s rock and roll lifestyle, saying: “All the rumours you heard about the era are true!”

His first serious band was The Roosters in 1963, where he played guitar alongside Eric Clapton and has also performed with The Rolling Stones – where they both ‘gigged’ at the Station Hotel in Richmond. Tom then joined Manfred Mann on bass just before they had their first hit 5-4-3-2-1. He soon switched back to guitar and stayed with Manfred Mann for all their hits throughout the 60s until the group broke up in 1969.

“Lockdown proved to me that I never want to retire” – which is certainly great news for his many fans. In March 2020 everything stopped – as it did for virtually everyone – and The Manfreds didnt´ go back out on the road again until September 2021.

We are privileged to have them here on the Costa Blanca this month, where the audience will hear all the greats such as ‘Mighty Quinn’, ‘Pretty Flamingo’, ‘54-3-2-1’ and ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’.
