Club championship finals at Jávea Green Bowls Club
FINALLY the rain stopped and we were able to complete our Turner Insurance sponsored club championship finals in glorious sunshine.
I have always maintained that members should strive to get their names on our honours board and what better way than winning a club championship discipline. Jeff Stevens took my words to heart and won the novices singles in his first year at the club, hopefully he will continue improving his game. Greg Sperring may be at the other end of the experience scale, but he won his first gents singles at Jávea Green, having previously been successful at Benitachell BC, by beating Keith Hamilton. Penny Pym, Trefor Evans and Velia Wood retained the mixed triples trophy, and Brenda Burgess was successful in two disciplines, winning the ladies pairs with Gail Cleaver and the mixed rinks with Christina Harris, Nige Thomas and Greg Sperring. Other two-time winners were Chris Salter who won the gents pairs with John Pittaway and the mixed pairs with Jean Mclaughlin, and Alan Phillips who won the vets and mixed singles trophies. The last remaining final saw Dave Dickinson and Graham Marshall win the drawn Aussie pairs.
The biggest smile of the day went to Maria Moraweic who, having joined our club last year made it through to three finals. Having lost the first two matches, she was looking to make amends in the ladies singles final against Jill Nobbs. Maria got off to a flying start and despite a typical comeback from Jill, she was able to run out winner with a 21-13 scoreline.
Joe Schulein, our president, thanked Jan and Alan Phillips for their hard work in organising another successful competition and Keith Hamilton, our captain, presented a voucher to be used at one of their favourite restaurants.
