WELL, it was good to be back on the fairways for the Memorial Trophy held at Oliva Nova on Tuesday, April 12, as our last official game on the course was on the March 15, so nearly a month since some of us turned out to play and, I my case anyway, it showed!

It was a very overcast day, in fact it started raining when we were on the first tee, so I wasn’t very optimistic we would finish, but in the end, we did. We had no guests on the day and 28 playing members turned out for the Memorial Trophy, which was another ‘major’, and the format was an individual Stableford competition.

We welcomed Stuart Mudway our latest new member, he has been trying to get a game for the last four weeks but the weather has beaten him every time. Good to see you at last Stuart.

Again, it was a close-run thing for second, third, fourth and fifth place with only two shots separating them. But the winner by three clear points was Keith Worrall.

The winners were: 1. Keith Worrall – 39 points, 2. Nigel Siddall – 36 points, 3. Fiona Sankey – 36 points, 4. Martin Gates – 35 points, 5. Jon Brun – 34 points

There were two twos recorded, with Bill Pike on the 16th and his son Richard on the 5th. But alas there were no winnings to take home. Bill had decided not to enter after not winning anything for two years and Richard said his dad didn’t pay for him so he lost out as well!

Nearest the pins went to Danny Herron on the 16th, and, with his second shot to the 5th the nearest the pin in two went to Rob Westlands. So a bottle of wine for each of them to take home.

Next week’s competition is a pairs combined. If you would like to play, please email the handicap secretary at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com
