Council unveils €49 million spending plan
Budget surplus plans will create ‘thousands’ of jobs
TORREVIEJA town hall has authorised the investment of budget surplus cash totalling €48,792,056 in different projects for the town.
Mayor Eduardo Dolón said a large part of the spending would be for constructing and remodelling infrastructure, as well as on social projects.
A council press release sent out on Wednesday noted that the local authority’s ruling committee had approved the move in a meeting that morning.
A total of €34,245,649 will be for infrastructure projects.
The two largest of these schemes have been in the pipeline for some time – the €8.9 million remodelling of the Paseo de La Libertad, where the ‘hippy market’ stands; and the long-awaited €5.7 million plan to resurface potholed streets in the municipality.
Other schemes on this list include the repairing of the leisure/sports centre (€5.6 million); maintenance of green areas and parks (€5m), an Alzheimer’s centre (€2.4m); children’s playgrounds (€2.2m); beach repairs and conservation (€1m); and school repairs (€970,628).
A total of €8,541,158 is for ‘different sectors of society’.
This includes €3.5m for employment schemes; €1.3m for beach monitors; €1.1m for ‘food for people at risk of exclusion’; €1m in grants for pensioners; €925,295 for NGOs and charities; €135,191 for the home care assistance programme; and €70,511 for the ‘eating at home’ programme.
A large chunk of the cash – €7,574,397 – will go to purchasing land and buildings.
Sr Dolón said the spending of the budget surplus money would create thousands of jobs.
Councillor for the treasury, Domingo Paredes said it would reactivate the local economy and make Torrevieja more attractive for tourists.
