Beach talks produce results

- By Shelley Liddell sliddell@cbnews.es

ON Friday Villajoyosa mayor Andreu Verdú, together with his town planning, environment and beach maintenance councillors, held a meeting with Rosa de los Ríos, head of Alicante’s coastal service, to find solutions to recover and protect the municipality’s beaches.

Sra de los Ríos said that in the short term the coast department (Costas) would carry out work focused on regenerating Paradis beach, affected by the bad weather before Easter. This will be paid for from the €600,000 that the government has allocated to Alicante province to alleviate the effects of storms on the coast.

Work will consist of the construction of a breakwater – a set of concrete or stone blocks along the 300 metres that connect the Paradis promenade with the beach area, in order to protect it from the action of the waves.

Accesses will be created to connect the promenade with sandy areas along the breakwater. This intervention will in turn help the natural regeneration of this stretch of beach, she said.

As the funds are already available, this work will likely to be completed before the summer season.

At the town’s main Centro beach, it will be the council that will undertake the work to restore the area, opposite Clavileño apartments, of almost 100 metres which was washed away by the waves.

The beach brigades worked tirelessly to have the beach ready in time for Easter, although they had to close off this particular beach access due to it being left with a very steep slope. Now the beach maintenance department is assessing different solutions to restore the access and recover the sand that was washed away.

Meanwhile the council continues to ask the government for new systems to protect and conserve their main beach, which is one of the town’s main tourist attractions.

The recuperation of part of Puntes del Moro beach was also discussed in order to develop plans to regenerate and safeguard it.

The solution proposed involves removing the old landfill from the beach to gain coastline to help the recovery of this sandy area, as well as the study of a project pending assessment that would serve to mitigate the future effects of bad weather.
