Cheaper vehicle inspections promised
The former privatisation of the service is under investigation by the judiciary
BRINGING the ITV (MOT) motor vehicle inspection back under public control will enable the service to be improved and fees lowered, according to regional vicepresident Mónica Oltra.
She gave details following the approval of the law authorising the creation of a Valencian ITV public company.
The service had been privatised in 1997 for 25 years by a Partido Popular (PP) regional government.
This privatisation is at the centre of a judicial investigation into alleged corruption led by the regional president at the time, Eduardo Zaplana.
The new law designates the regional business competitiveness institute (IVACE) to supervise the company and ensure it is managed transparently and efficiently.
This company will take over the duties of the seven existing concessionaries, which were informed of the decision in September 2021, once the current contract expires on December 31.
Use of the ITV testing stations will be passed to the public company, which will also be able to expand the network with authorisation from the regional department for the economy.
The company will additionally be responsible for testing taxi meters and other complementary vehicle inspection services.
A budget of €60,000 has been assigned to cover the expenses of setting up the public company.
“Public management will permit safety to be safeguarded on Valencian roads, tariffs to be reduced for people who use it, and the quality, efficiency and competitiveness of the service to be improved,” added a regional government spokesman.
