‘Provisional’ facilities were set up almost 10 years ago

THE CONTRACT to build the street cleaning and rubbish collection work centre for Orihuela Costa was due to be put out to tender by the town hall this week.

It will replace the provisional facilities that were set up almost 10 years ago in car parking areas on Calle Ebro, between Entre Golf urbanisation and the AP-7 motorway.

The centre will be built on a 14,170 square metre municipal plot in the same area with a budget of €900,000 and is due to take 12 months to complete, once the contract has been awarded and the work begins.

The council assures the building has been designed to blend into the landscape and be energy efficient, and will be ‘totally respectful of the environment’.

Former councillor for street cleaning Dámaso Aparicio said he was happy that this centre, which has been demanded for a long time, is becoming a reality.

He said they had ‘worked a lot’ to find a solution to a situation that resulted when the rubbish collection service was ‘rescued’ in 2013, when it was ‘provisionally’ taken over for six months by the coalition council at the time.

“The trucks and workers were left in the street, causing them such a big problem that they called strikes and residents of the coast have to put up with these trucks outside their front doors,” said Sr Aparicio.

The centre is planned to include a 300m2 administration building with offices, changing rooms, toilets, a meeting room and rest area, as well as a 400m2 warehouse, half of it for parking the trucks and vehicles and the rest for a workshop and to store tools and chemical products.

There will also be a significant parking area for a total of 28 cars, rubbish trucks and street cleaning vehicles.
