Tchaikovsky and more at arts society
ON May 5 The Arts Socety Marina Alta (TASMA) will be hosting their next lecture 'It’s not just Tchaikovsky', by Nigel Bates at Salones Canor, Cami del Assagador de Canor, Teulada.
The lecture is a wide-ranging exploration of music chosen by ballet choreographers through the years, proving that the right composition, moves and designs can create modern masterpieces and timeless classics.
We move from the grandness of Imperial Russia with the creation of Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and other established and popular works to the current modern repertoire of the Royal Ballet, exploring the challenges met by both composers and choreographers.
Nigel Bates started his musical career in the Regimental Band of the Scots Guards, leaving the army to join the Orchestra of Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet and to hold an appointment as a professor at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
He has been a performer for more than 40 years in and out of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, including 17 years as principal percussionist with the orchestra and eight years as the music administrator of The Royal Ballet. Nigel was also active in organising the ROH staff and artist charity events, raising funds for Save the Children.
Doors open at 10.00 for registration and coffee, with the lecture starting at 11.00. Admission for members is free and €15 for visitors. Complimentary wine/beer/soft drinks will be available afterwards.
